The Gospel
This is the most important message you will ever read, the most important decision you will ever make, the greatest gift you will ever receive.
Do you think you are a good person?
What does “good” really mean?
According to Webster’s 1828 Dictionary, the word ‘good’ is defined as:
“Morally excellent; virtuous; pious; religious: applied to persons, actions, or things, and conveying the idea of perfect conformity to the will of God.”
This shows that being “good” isn’t just about being nice or better than others.
It means being morally perfect, just as God is perfect.
> **Romans 3:10**
> *“None is righteous, no, not one.”*
God has given us His law so that we can examine ourselves to see if we are good or morally perfect.
Have you ever put anything ahead of God in your life?
“You shall have no other gods before Me.”
Example: Maybe you’ve trusted in your own success or comfort more than in God, or spent more time thinking about sports, money, or entertainment than Him.Have you ever made something more important than God — like money, success, or even relationships?
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image.”
Example: You may not bow to a statue, but if your heart is set on things like fame, approval, or possessions more than God — that’s idolatry.Have you ever used God’s name disrespectfully — as a curse word or casually?
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.”
Example: Saying “Oh my God” or using Jesus’ name as a curse without thinking — that dishonors the holy name of the One who created you.Do you honor God with a day of rest and worship, or is life just nonstop?
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”
Example: Skipping time with God to keep working, shopping, or entertaining yourself can be a sign that you’re not setting time apart for Him.Have you always honored your father and mother?
“Honor your father and your mother.”
Example: Rolling your eyes, yelling, or ignoring your parents’ wisdom — even when you were young — is breaking this commandment.Have you ever hated someone or wished harm on them?
“You shall not murder.”
Example: Jesus said that anger in your heart is like murder (Matthew 5:22). Have you ever held a grudge or wished someone would just “go away”?Ever looked at someone with lust?
“You shall not commit adultery.”
Example: Jesus said that even looking at someone with lustful intent is adultery in the heart (Matthew 5:28). This includes things like pornography or fantasizing.Have you ever taken something that didn’t belong to you — even something small?
“You shall not steal.”
Example: Downloading music illegally, taking pens from work, or not giving back borrowed items — stealing isn’t just big heists.Have you ever lied — even a small “white lie”?
“You shall not bear false witness.”
Example: Saying something untrue to protect yourself, exaggerating a story, or hiding the truth from someone — that’s all lying.Have you ever been jealous of what someone else had?
“You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
Example: Wishing you had your friend’s job, house, spouse, or car and feeling bitter about it — that’s coveting.
We’ve All Sinned
If you answered yes to even one of the questions above, then you have broken God’s Law and you are guilty like the rest of us. And you fall short of God’s perfect standard to receive eternal life.
- Romans 3:23 — “For all have sinned and fall short of God’s glory.”
- God’s glory in this verse is in contrast to our sin. His glory in this verse is referring to His Moral Perfection.
- He is Holy and separated from sin.
The Consequence of Sin
God is Holy and separated from sin. We are sinners and separated from Him. In fact, because of our sin we are indifferent towards God and want nothing to do with His moral standards.
- Romans 6:23 — “For the wages of sin is death.”
- Sin earns us death — physical and spiritual. It breaks our relationship with God.
- Matthew 25:46 — “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
Hell is the just punishment for our sin. And we are all guilty for sinning against God.
But God...
- John 3:16 — “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
God didn’t leave us in our guilt. He made a way through His Son, Jesus.
Who Is Jesus?
- Colossians 1:15-17 — “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation… and in Him all things hold together.”
- Jesus is God’s Son, fully God and fully man.
He lived a perfect, sinless life. He obeyed God completely — something we could never do.
What Did Jesus Do?
Isaiah 53:5 — “But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.”
- This was written centuries before Jesus came — and yet it describes exactly what He would do.
- Jesus went to the cross and bore the wrath of God in our place.
- He was pierced for our sin and suffered in our place.
He died and rose again on the third day — conquering sin and death so we could have peace with God and eternal life through Him.
The Great Exchange that took place on the Cross
- 2 Corinthians 5:21 — “He who knew no sin became sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
Jesus took the punishment for our sins and paid the penalty we owe God; which is death. He rose again for our justification. In other words, if we trust in Him and not in ourselves our sins will never be held against us. It is called the Great Exchange, He took our sins and we receive His righteousness, the righteousness of God and . That’s the Good News!
How Should You Respond?
- Romans 10:9 — “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
- Acts 3:19 — “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out…”
- God calls you to:
Repent — Turn from sin and toward God.
Believe — Trust in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation.
